Bellona Times (a.k.a. Ray Davis) favorably mentions and mildly critiques my eternal work in progress, my mock Platonic dialogue about 'theory', "The Advantages and Disadvantages of Theory For Life" (PDF). I haven't put this version online before, but - what with one thing and another - it seems OK. So there it is.
It's now officially a penultimate draft, with me lashing the dumb brute cruelly in an attempt to make it be half as long. (It is very long. Three chapters, really.) Comments and criticisms welcome as always.
There have been sundry meditations of late about the advantages and disadvantages of blogging for academic life. I've been sort of meaning to contribute. For now I will just remark that, were it not for folks met through blogging, I would have found far fewer good readers for this odd literary indulgence of mine. Thank you all - you know who you are - for criticisms, comments, general encouragement and sundry emails over the last several months. I haven't quite gotten the silly thing published. But I've got a fair-sized, high-quality and - as it so happens - mostly academic audience. Which is exactly same thing, except it isn't tenurable. (Sigh.)
I suppose I should mention that part I is lean and mean - but in need of a better ending. Hence the genesis of parts II & III, which are overstuffed and under-organized. Now that I have built the toybox - so many bright colors and cracked and broken items - I am rummaging around for a suitable ending for part I. That's how I work.
