Wow. The Black Racer was not one of Jack Kirby's finest moments -- he was no Silver Surfer, for sure.

ash

He's sort of an Roman Centurion who does Xtreme sports, isn't he?

The Black Racer is the spirit of Christmas Yet to Come! Hence, the skis.

ben wolfson

He seems to be a ventriloquist, as well.

Carlos

Hm. Kirby, in the early 1970s, anthropomorphized Death as an implacable black man on skis. Gaiman, in the early 1990s, anthropomorphized Death as a winsome Goth girl, with no skis.

Discuss.

Gary Farber

What the hell? I left a long, link-ridden, comment on this the other day.

Gary Farber

I wrote about his looking like every other Kirby character, I expressed puzzlement over Wolfson's comment, I dragged in panelogy and Scott McCloud and Understanding Comics, and a bunch of other stuff I no longer recall.

Well, of course I don't recall. It was last year.

  • Confused by our comment policy?

We're testing a strong CC license as a form of troll repellant. Does that sound strange? Read this thread. (I know, it's long. Keep scrolling. Further. Further. Ah, there.) So basically, we figure trolls will recognize that selling coffee cups and t-shirts is the best revenge, and will keep away. If we're wrong about that, at least someone can still sell the cups and shirts. (Sigh.)
