Sockdog

she.jpgHere are instructions on how to make sock dogs. They are adapted from an old Martha Stewart Kids which I couldn't find online, so I just made these. I think I made it look harder than it is; they are, as I noted below, hella easy to make. I was just being thorough. Click on images to enlarge.

UPDATE: when I click on the images in Firefox the bottom is cut off. However, if I download and save the image and then open it in preview or whatever it looks fine, so I suggest you do that. Something about typepad...

Awesome! Thanks, Belle!

no prob. I was just going to comment indignantly, where are my appreciative comments! but never mind. good night, everyone.

I am almost certainly never going to make a sock dog, but I find these instructions very cheering nonetheless.

This is also a good way to bring things (foie gras, for example) past customs. Once it's beloved and slobbery no customs agent is going to let his dog make the baby cry.

beloved and slobbery

This is the best kind of fois gras, the beloved and slobbery kind.

I am charmed by the handwritten '!1!'. Oh noes! You hit the shift key on your pencil!

I have a 12-week-old niece who will be getting one of these. Thanks!!

kent, if you are making a sock dog for a baby I recommend you sew the eyes and nose with embroidery floss, because a baby could om nom nom that button right off and then choke.

Maybe you would know. Are sock puppets anything like sock puppies?

no, sock puppets are just made by sewing things (eyes, hair) onto the sole of socks and putting your hand inside to create a mouth with your fingers forming the top and your thumb the bottom. you can add a felt tongue if desired. call it "sprezzatura".

For those of us familiar with internet traditions, sock puppets are something quite else.

  • Confused by our comment policy?

We're testing a strong CC license as a form of troll repellant. Does that sound strange? Read this thread. (I know, it's long. Keep scrolling. Further. Further. Ah, there.) So basically, we figure trolls will recognize that selling coffee cups and t-shirts is the best revenge, and will keep away. If we're wrong about that, at least someone can still sell the cups and shirts. (Sigh.)
