As longtime readers may recall, Zoë is a Christian. She's clear on what it's about, too; she and Violet were playing with the crêche figurines and Zoë had the angel explaining to Mary that her son was very special and when he grew up he would save the universe. And that's what it's all about, right? Those wondering why we have a crêche if nobody else is a Christian should know that my born-again friend who took me for faith-helaing that one time gave it to us, but actually I'm fine with it on general holiday decor grounds. Except that it's not totally my style, but eh. We had one when I was a kid and it was always thrilling to see who would get to unwrap the baby Jesus this year.
The problem of evil came up the other day somehow, and I was just explaining it to her, and she did this funny Zoë thing where she kind of jumps in place with surprise and consternation. Then she was silent for a short while as she was washing her hands in my bathroom. "Isn't there also supposed to be the devil?" I allowed as how there was, and that many people thought this was the answer. "And anyway, maybe it will all work out in the end." Indeed.
Has Zoe been sneaking peeks at John's Sandman comics?

I you're gonna believe in a benevolent god, you really ought to be an oldskool zoroastrian. You get to be eaten by vultures too!

I'm a little ashamed to delurk over this, but in christmas shopping for my children will dare all. Quite some time ago, you mentioned a really great drawing book that your girls had -- where it starts out with just a curved line, and gradually gets more complex? I wish I could remember more. Haven't been able to find it by searching your archives. Thanks --

John says it's called "Squiggles" by Taro Gomi (I think) and he posted about it at Crooked Timber.
