I had to go to the US Embassy today to pick up the girls' new passports (and look, practically 48 hours before departing on a flight to Indonesia! So timely and organized! Ha. I also discovered I don't have any pages left in mine but I couldn't wait around to get them inserted. I removed some Vietnamese thing that was stapled in there and there's now room for one--full page--Indonesian visa, but I'll have to go back before next month.) There are official pictures of George Bush and a particularly leering Dick Cheney up behind the guards at the entrance, over the X-ray machines.
My mom and the girls and I were waiting behind the orange line while our bags were X-rayed and looking up at the pictures; my mom and I glanced at each other. The guard sitting behind us piped up all of a sudden: "we're taking those down right at midnight!" We shared a moment of "Yes! Sweet!"
I guess we don't look like Republicans.
I've been watching the mall fill up downtown in DC on TV since before dawn (it being evening here). My brother and sister have tickets, but as far as I understand about a quarter million other people do too, so I don't know if they're going to fight through all that. I hope so. Go Mia and Ben!! I also salute everyone out there freezing their nuts off, getting on the Metro at 4am and all that. I am really happy for my country today.
Goodbye leering Cheney! The worst official photo ever!
