Very impressive. Once again I genuflect before your creativity. My knees are getting a bit skinned.

jholbo

thanks woof! More like that, please!

(Is that so much to ask, I ask you?)

The Modesto Kid

The little derby is a nice touch.

B-but, why did Owl "seem to have no wings at all"? Looks like he has the normal accoutrement here.

Salient

Doesn't anyone want to praise my art?

Not until you praise my poem! (More sincerely - its day-lateness-and-dollar-shortness side, I hope you enjoy it.)

But you know what really breaks my heart? There is no Squid and Owl Logo coffee mug available.

I will have to settle for Squid and Owl Reading, which, because the universe is fundamentally incoherent, is not available as a bookmark. Shucks.

Anyhow. Squid and Owl has fast become a daily treat for my wife and I to check each evening. It's fantastic in the classic sense of that word, and inspiring in its imaginative playfulness. Each new addition is appreciated. So there you go! :)

I see a coffee mug at the bottom of the store. (At least, for the Change design).

This new comic makes me very happy. So much so that I'm generally surprised that the people I share it with aren't more enthused by it. Also, I checked out your "writings" page but the links to your dissertation are all dead. Not that I particularly need to be reading someone else's dissertation right now, but I am somewhat idly curious what a prolegomenon to the Tractatus would look like.

jholbo

"Not until you praise my poem!"

Can I use that as a blurb when the book comes out? I think it is very winning.

And, yes! There are some nice coffee mugs at the bottom of some of the store pages. Maybe I should rearrange things to make it clearer.

As to Owl's wings. It was supposed to be the case that 30's style Owl's wings just look like curls of long hair peeking out the sides, not like wings. Also, the 'wings' are no larger, even though Owl is larger. Also, what the hell? Squid only has 6 tentacles. The other four have become some kind of moustache. So basically I'm just messing around.

30's style Owl's wings

If only they made Zoot suits in the proper size for cephalopods...

Is there an overview of the S&O oeuvre anywhere? 'Cause after being off the net for Holy Week I feel like it's already grown beyond my ability to comprehend, let alone praise.

David Moles

(That's during Holy Week, I mean, not with any particular Passion-related intent.)

jholbo

Hey Dave. I think the Flickr set is the most convenient way. It's got the whole thing, soup to nuts.

There's a little widget in the sidebar, linking to it. Here's the direct link:

Thanks again for the kind words. By the by, I recently enjoyed your contribution to that Gardner Dozois anthology, while I was relaxing in Bali. It was a good time.

David Moles

Glad you liked it! Well-suited for reading on an island, I think.

As for S&O, the artwork's pretty splendid, but you also bust a fine rhyme, I must say. I personally would buy a well-made "The squid, you know, is jet-propulsive / Highly intelligent, somewhat repulsive" T-shirt in a heartbeat.

jholbo

That's an interesting choice, Dave. I have been wondering what sort of S&O gear would actually sell. I did make a cafepress store, did you see?

(shameless plug, in case you didn't see)

I think that the jet-propulsive squid art is very fine and would make a nice t-shirt, but it needs a bit of cleaning first. The 'somewhat repulsive' one - I'm not sure I quite like the eyes on that page yet. But I'm very gratified that you are into the poetry.

We're testing a strong CC license as a form of troll repellant. Does that sound strange? Read this thread. (I know, it's long. Keep scrolling. Further. Further. Ah, there.) So basically, we figure trolls will recognize that selling coffee cups and t-shirts is the best revenge, and will keep away. If we're wrong about that, at least someone can still sell the cups and shirts. (Sigh.)
