woof

Methinks there is a hedgehog in the flames.

So Owl is an abstract expressionist? That's not surprising.

I bet Squid is a minimalist.

In spite of "And should Mad Science / Switch their brains / They're almost unaffected", I'm beginning to find that Squid and Owl have distinct personalities.

The Modesto Kid

Somehow I'm surprised to find that Squid is the poet and Owl the painter. Not sure why but before this week, I would have thought the reverse.

Brock

Owl is a Heraclitean; Squid is a Parmenidean.

Squid's poetry reminds me of Blake. I'm not sure what sort of poetry Owl would write.

Not to give away any secrets, but the idea is supposed to be that Owl is more utopian and Squid is more reactionary. But in such a way that they sort of wrap around the screen and meet, as these things will. So, for example, Squid kills the queen because he cares about true royalty. And Owl kills the President with a bust that looks faintly like Rousseau. (But also like an eggplant.) And Owl fights for Napoleon. He is on the side of the French revolutionaries. And Squid is on the Austrian side at Austerlitz. Owl's art is progressive, in an abstract expressionist way. (This feature was also dictated by the fact that I, John Holbo, can't do much with paint beyond the finger-painting level. Hence, Owl must perforce belong to some 'hey, my kid could do that' modern school.)

I knew it. I guessed eggplant.

I guess you could describe Owl as "Mr. Fix-it" to Squid's "Mr. Fixity"...

  • Confused by our comment policy?

We're testing a strong CC license as a form of troll repellant. Does that sound strange? Read this thread. (I know, it's long. Keep scrolling. Further. Further. Ah, there.) So basically, we figure trolls will recognize that selling coffee cups and t-shirts is the best revenge, and will keep away. If we're wrong about that, at least someone can still sell the cups and shirts. (Sigh.)
