Ha! That's a stomped-on foot if I ever saw one.

And also a not terribly remorseful foot-stomper: she seems to be exactly as pleased as it is theoretically possible to be while apologizing.

Which makes this work a scientific accomplishment, I think. Or some such thing. My compliments to the artist!

Otherhandedly, I found the squid picture very disconcerting.

It took me some time to realize my discomfort stems not from the fact that Squid is eyeless, but the fact that it's possible to see the whisps of water through his eye-sockets. That implies there is at minimum two additional holes in Squid's head, or perhaps ONE GAPING LARGE HOLE in the back of Squid's head (which is what's really getting me)...

My wife's response to my disconcertment was: "That sort of thing is quite normal in a children's book." Eep. No wonder I had nightmares as a kid. In fact, I do specifically remember nightmares of eyeless beings, massive uncountable numbers of them, with the light of the sunrise behind them shining through the sockets, and the horrific knowledge of what that entailed. :(

Dude, those are his eyeballs! Admittedly, the same color as the water ... but surely they look like eyeballs? I admit they have an oddly sunken aspect, behind the paper face ...

The Zoe drawing, on the other hand, is a marvel of realism and verismilitude in every way, as you say.

  • Confused by our comment policy?

We're testing a strong CC license as a form of troll repellant. Does that sound strange? Read this thread. (I know, it's long. Keep scrolling. Further. Further. Ah, there.) So basically, we figure trolls will recognize that selling coffee cups and t-shirts is the best revenge, and will keep away. If we're wrong about that, at least someone can still sell the cups and shirts. (Sigh.)
